A new form of Health Assurance

Today’s loud and distracting arguments over health care reform have taken the focus off of the real health care problems real people are facing every day. Those problems have not changed no matter how loud the shouting or how many talk radio hosts scream Nazi.

The problems are basic. 1. People can’t afford health care. 2. People can’t get it, if they have a pre-existing condition. 3. If they do have it, their policies can be cancelled for reasons known only to health insurance companies.

This brings up one of the biggest problems that underlies them all – instability. Our current system creates an atmosphere of fear and doubt. An atmosphere where our society is literally destabilized by the possibility facing everyone in this country - that if they get sic they cannot get care or they could lose everything. Destabilizing is too mild a term.

 What if we, as a nation, could focus our attention on that instability? And if we can’t, as a nation, can we do it locally? Can we find ways to stabilize our local communities?
